OCTOBER 2017
In an effort to promote awareness of school bullying, the VSBA Board of Directors has designated the month of October as VSBA Bullying Prevention Month. Childhood bullying is a significant problem nationwide. It can cause school absenteeism, mental and physical stress, poor school performance, poor self-esteem, and in some cases, school violence. Statistics show that 160,000 children in the United States miss school each day as a result of being bullied. School board members, superintendents, teachers, and parents play a critical role in creating a climate where bullying is not tolerated. It has been proven when adults and children stand together, bullying ends.
The Virginia General Assembly has designated the month of October as Disability History and Awareness Month. The purpose of this designation is to create public awareness, knowledge, and understanding of disabilities, and to promote full participation by students with disabilities into school and community activities. Youth with disabilities, parents, teachers, and staff from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities, and the Virginia Commonwealth University Partnership for People with Disabilities have developed a variety of resources that can be used to promote and highlight Disability History and Awareness Month in Virginia during October.
We honor the hard work and dedication of our principals during the month of October. National Principals Month is our opportunity to say “thank you” to principals and to share with the community all the great things that principals do. The key to student success is a great school, and the key to a great school is a great principal.
National School Lunch Week (NSLW) is October 12-16, 2017. The 2017 NSLW theme is “School Lunch: Recipes for Success”, and it’s all about showing off the secrets to school lunch success in schools and districts—fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and of course, students. The National School Lunch Program serves more than 30 million children every school day—that’s something to smile about!
America’s Safe Schools Week, occurs annually during the third full week in October. Activities conducted during America’s Safe Schools Week will draw attention to the continuing problem of school violence and educate everyone about how schools can be made safer and more secure. America’s Safe Schools Week offers an opportunity to address this very important issue and to take steps to ensure that schools offer students and teachers an environment in which they can perform to the best of their abilities.
National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties - to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. The week is designed to promote school bus safety, school districts throughout the country observe School Bus Safety Week - held during the third week in October each year.
